(Into The Carpathian Wild: Season 1: Autumn) Divoká příroda European wildlife is threatened like never before, but in the Carpathian Mountains it has found its last great refuge. Home to Europes most extensive primeval forests and the continents largest populations of bears, wolves and lynx, the Carpathians are a stronghold of biodiversity. Follow the lives of this remarkable wildlife over the course of a year to reveal how each species is connected to the wider ecosystem. Together, they sustain a landscape that protects biodiversity, stores carbon and safeguards life-giving water, making the Carpathians one of Europes most vital natural treasures. Autumn transforms the mountainsides of the Carpathians into sweeping carpets of bronze, amber and gold. The forests echo with the powerful roars of red deer stags, signaling the fight for the right to herd females. The battle is gladiatorial, and the weakened losers are picked off by wolf packs prowling for an easy meal across the forests. For bears, its time to gorge themselves on berries and nuts to put on weight before hibernation. Despite their immense size, they climb beech and pine trunks to reach the juiciest nuts at the very top. They even stray into human terrain to raid cornfields, willing to do anything to satisfy their hunger. The survival of all these magnificent creatures depends on the old-growth trees, which absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere and regulate the Earths temperature for all to live.
