(Into The Carpathian Wild: Season 1: Winter) Divoká příroda European wildlife is threatened like never before, but in the Carpathian Mountains it has found its last great refuge. Home to Europes most extensive primeval forests and the continents largest populations of bears, wolves and lynx, the Carpathians are a stronghold of biodiversity. Follow the lives of this remarkable wildlife over the course of a year to reveal how each species is connected to the wider ecosystem. Together, they sustain a landscape that protects biodiversity, stores carbon and safeguards life-giving water, making the Carpathians one of Europes most vital natural treasures. Winter favors animals with clever adaptations to survive. Even though the Carpathian Mountains are in the grip of snow and ice, they are still teeming with life. Chamois, a creature descended from the Ice Age, have special hooves to run across steep slopes without slipping, which are perfect for chasing females vertically downhill at the insanely high speeds of 50 kilometers per hour. Crossbills have hooked beaks to pluck seeds from spruce cones. As for the rare capercaillie, they digest pine needles by eating stones that grind the needles up in their digestive system. Despite the challenging but seasonal weather conditions, winter is mating season for the Carpathians most elusive inhabitant and rarest animal: the lynx. Almost extinct in the rest of Europe, the vast wilderness of the Carpathians helps the species survive and thrive. MN 7 (United Kingdom)
