(North Korea from the Inside with Michael Palin: Season 1: Part 1) History The historic meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-In generated front page headlines across the globe making it a unique time to visit the Hermit Kingdom. As news filtered through the country Michael and the crew captured these historic days with the ordinary people of this secretive and little understood country. Michael visited sites and locations rarely, if ever, explored in his journey across the country, while spending time with citizens from all walks of life and witnessing the countrys extraordinary annual May Day celebrations. With unprecedented access, Michael Palin embarks on a 1300-mile journey into one of the most mysterious countries in the world, North Korea. Starting his journey in China, Michael travels on an overnight train to the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang and gets his first look at a country that has been cut off from the outside world for 70 years. In Pyongyang, Michael travels on the citys metro system to visit the two 23-metre-tall statues of the Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, the first leaders of North Korea and talks to one of his guides about the importance of the great leaders. Michael then travels to the top of the Juche tower to take in the view of Pyongyang, a city that was bombed flat in the Korean War. Later, Michael experiences a North Korean Health Spa and after he discusses the restrictions on filming in a totalitarian state. The next morning, Michael visits a local school and talks to some students about what they want to be when they grow up and then sees a sports hall full of kids playing ping pong. After walking around Kim Il Sung Square, home to the countrys famous military parades, Michael travels to the Mansudae Artists Studio to see a piece of Propaganda art being created in front of his eyes. The next day is May Day, a national holiday in North Korea and a great time to mix with local people. Michael spends the day in the park, watching people play games and sports in the morning and then joins them in an afternoon of dancing and drinking. As the day comes to an end, Michael decides its time to leave Pyongyang and explore the rest of the country. MN 12 (United Kingdom)
