On the final leg of its around-the-world route in 1956, Pan Am 6 sets off from Honolulu bound for San Francisco. Carrying only 24 passengers, the Boeing Stratocruiser is the epitome of luxury in this golden age of flight. However, midway over the Pacific, Pan Am 6 encounters engine trouble. Now unable to reach California or return to Hawaii, the crew must ditch in the open ocean. A nearby U.S. Coast Guard vessel picks up the distress call and races to intercept. After circling until dawn, Pan Am 6 attempts the landing on water. The aircraft breaks apart, but amazingly none of the 31 people onboard are killed.
