Pilots and passengers recount their harrowing experiences onboard. From mechanical failures to extreme weather, this immersive series pieces together the evidence and sheds light on the chain of events that made the difference between a near miss and a catastrophe. Each incident is unpacked to reveal the lessons that changed aviation safety forever. A team of elite pilots recreates the flights using cutting-edge flight-simulator technology to discover what could have been done differently and how future disasters might be avoided. On the final leg of its around-the-world route in 1956, Pan Am 6 sets off from Honolulu bound for San Francisco. Carrying only 24 passengers, the Boeing Stratocruiser is the epitome of luxury in this golden age of flight. However, midway over the Pacific, Pan Am 6 encounters engine trouble. Now unable to reach California or return to Hawaii, the crew must ditch in the open ocean. A nearby U.S. Coast Guard vessel picks up the distress call and races to intercept. After circling until dawn, Pan Am 6 attempts the landing on water. The aircraft breaks apart, but amazingly none of the 31 people onboard are killed. Survivor accounts retell the extraordinary landing and daring rescue operation. Discover the precariousness of early engines and the evolution of safety standards taken for granted today.
