(Witches: Truth Behind the Trials: Compilation Season 1: When Fear Spreads) Historický For generations, the Salem witch trials have captured the imaginations of artists, writers and historians across the world. Beyond New England, witch trials were a staple globally during the 16th and 17th centuries, reaching Germany, Scotland, England, Sweden and Ireland. The worst of the trials often followed a similar pattern of suspicion and accusations, leading to nearly 60 thousand wrongful executions. This three-part series brings to life the world of so-called witches and witch hunters, introducing the perpetrators and victims through recreations and testimony from witchcraft experts and detailing the events surrounding some of the worlds most infamous witch trials in the U.S. and Europe. Countries across Europe continue to fall victim to the unrelenting witch trials. This special episode paints a vivid portrait of how the witch hunts keep spreading. In 1645, two self-appointed witch-hunters, Matthew Hopkins and John Stearne, roamed across England, investigating and torturing so-called witches in exchange for money. Then, in 1688, an event known as “The Great Noise” witnessed hysteria spread across parts of Sweden, driven by children telling stories of a fantastical place where they were taken by witches who cavorted with the devil.
