(Hidden Beneath the Cities: Season 1: Hidden Hypogeum and Lost Letters) History “Hidden Beneath the Cities” uncovers the extraordinary worlds lying just below modern urban centers. Beneath the streets of stone, soil and concrete exist hidden realms shaped by survival, ritual and imagination. Episodes reveal Malta’s Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, with its 5,000-year-old burial chambers; Turkey’s vast caves in Midyat, which sheltered whole communities; and Iran’s qanats, which sustain desert life. From Naples’ folklore tombs and WWII shelters to England’s mysterious Royston Cave and Poland’s Wieliczka Salt Mine, the series blends myth, history and artistry. Other journeys explore Israel’s Cave of Letters, Denmark’s Neolithic dwellings, Cold War bunkers in England and Seoul, and more. Each story reveals ingenuity, resilience and mystery, proving every city conceals a hidden world waiting to be discovered. In Naples, Italy, a centuries-old tomb at the Santa Maria la Nova monastery may conceal the body of Vlad the Impaler, the prince who inspired the legend of Dracula. Scholars debate whether the tomb is linked to the infamous ruler or simply its known occupant. In Israel’s Judean Desert, the Cave of Letters reveals a haunting archive of survival: ancient manuscripts, bronze ritual objects, and the remains of 17 people. The cave once sheltered Jewish rebels and families. In Malta, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, a 6,000-year-old labyrinth carved by hand, shows astonishing architectural and acoustic sophistication. Part tomb, part temple, it may have been used for rituals. Finally, a cave in Kenya reveals the oldest human burial site in Africa — for a 78,000-year-old child — reshaping our understanding of early human culture, emotion and belief. (Canada)
