(Engineering by Catastrophe: Season 1: Rise of the Supertalls) Engineering Across the globe, engineers are creating extraordinary modern masterpieces, structures that push beyond the limits of what came before. Each year, innovations grow more impressive as bridges, tunnels, skyscrapers and even spacecraft become bigger, bolder and more ambitious. Yet, every breakthrough brings new risks. To ensure the safest outcomes, engineers must study worst-case scenarios in which major structures are pushed to their limits and fatal flaws are exposed. Fires, explosions, floods and catastrophic collisions are difficult to confront but essential to understand. In this six-part series, we learn from the past to build a safer future. When the twin towers fell in 2001, many engineers thought the era of the skyscraper was over. But the extraordinary catastrophe marked a turning point of a different kind. Safety codes and new understandings were shared internationally, and enthusiasm for tall buildings reached new heights. Construction of supertall buildings — skyscrapers taller than 300 meters — accelerated. Now, there are 71 cities across the world with at least one. Each one, from the One World Trade Center in New York to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, stands on the shoulders of past failures, hard lessons written in concrete and steel. MN 7 (Canada)
