In Midyat, Turkey, archaeologists uncover the vast underground city of Matiate, stretching across tunnels and chambers carved thousands of years ago. Evidence of churches, synagogues and Roman coins suggests it was once a refuge for people fleeing religious persecution. In Royston, England, workmen stumble upon a mysterious chalk-carved chamber filled with intricate religious carvings. Beneath Orvieto, Italy, a wine cellar excavation reveals Cavità 254, a striking Etruscan subterranean complex. Once a quarry or water system, its deliberate infilling with pottery and bones hints at ritual or symbolic burial practices. Finally, in Abarkuh, Iran, archaeologists map a massive subterranean tunnel network.
