Air Crash Investigation uncovers the truth behind the most legendary aviation disasters, and every episode features eyewitness accounts, captivating reenactments, state-of-the-art CGI, and interviews with the investigators who ultimately determined what went wrong. Unraveling the complex mystery is a painstaking process that takes months—and sometimes years—of detective work. The twisted wreckage at the crash site tells part of the story; investigators can use it to learn about the final seconds of a flight and rule out mechanical failures. The flight data and cockpit voice recorders are critical, but they don’t always reveal what happened. It almost always takes a tragic combination of factors to bring down an airplane. Korean Air Flight 6316 is en route to Seoul with a load of non-hazardous cargo. But shortly after takeoff, the pilots struggle to navigate the skies above Shanghai. The controller notices the plane isn’t climbing to its assigned altitude. And within minutes, the MD-11F disappears from radar altogether and slams into a residential neighborhood. The massive impact registers the equivalent of a 1.6-magnitude earthquake, destroys the flight data recorder, and claims the lives of five civilians and the three-man crew. Investigators from China, South Korea, and the US join forces, and are soon able to rule out both mechanical issues and sabotage.
