Just minutes after taking off from Lima, the crew of Aeroperú Flight 603 is overwhelmed by a series of conflicting error messages. Flying blind through thick clouds—and unable to confirm either airspeed or altitude—the pilots don’t know which alarm they can trust. A controller steps in and dispatches a rescue plane to guide them back to the airport, but help doesn’t arrive in time. And just as the crew is troubleshooting over open ocean, the Boeing 757 plunges into the Pacific, instantly killing everyone on board. A Navy expedition to the sea floor proves the plane was intact when it hit the water and successfully retrieves the plane’s black boxes. A single image of the wreckage reveals a minor maintenance glitch with deadly repercussions, while the flight data reveals the crew was ill-prepared for a fatal cascade of erroneous data.
