(Lost Treasures of Rome: Compilation Season 4: Weapons of War) Historie Archaeologists working across Europe and the Mediterranean continue to uncover sites and artifacts from the ancient Roman Empire. To understand the lives of regular people, we explore a remarkably well-preserved villa in Pompeii with particular focus on the quarters for the enslaved. In Jordan, a regular tomb reveals that the inhabitants of this city, at the edge of the empire, were a cultural melting pot. To study the ambitious innovations of the times, experts unearth the ingenious heating systems of a bathhouse in Pompeii and a grand amphitheater built for an emperor’s personal use. The power of the Roman war machine is investigated by studying the bones of victims at a fort near Hadrian’s Wall in Britain and lethal weaponry at a massive military city in Austria. The Roman war machine spanned all corners of the empire, from Hadrian’s Wall in England to Ephesus in Turkey, from the port of Puteoli, which lies south of Rome, up north to Carnuntum in Austria. Once naval dominance of the entire Mediterranean led to the creation of the empire, Rome could shift focus to sustaining its commanding power over the vast territory. Archaeologists unearth a massive military city at a strategic location, deadly weapons from the frontlines, and bones of the victims that dared to attack the edges of the empire. Using ancient designs from the height of Rome’s power, they also reconstruct a ship and catapult to test them as proof of the Romans’ superior fighting power. They also uncover tombs of gladiators where the power of the imperial propaganda is on full display. MN 7 (United States)
